The Last Translator

Path with 1 story split·1 min read·6 paragraphs

Completed 3/22/2026

Kirra was the last. Not the last fluent speaker — the last speaker of any kind. Mirean had no other mouth left in the world.

The document arrived in a sealed envelope with the ministry's crest. It was seventy-three pages of legal text requiring a certified translation within thirty days.

She read the first clause and understood: this was a land reclassification bill that required the official termination of Mirean as a recognised language in order to proceed.

She translated the document. Precisely, accurately, without error. Bureau-perfect language draining the life from something ancient.

She recorded herself reading the entire Mirean oral tradition — every story, every song, every greeting — and deposited the archive with three separate institutions.

The bill passed. Mirean became legally extinct on a Wednesday at 2:43 PM. The archive was viewed 400,000 times in the first week.
